Composers celebrate Asian music

The Japan Federation of Composers, one of the founding members of the Asian Composers League, will hold the Asian Music Festival 2003 from Sept. 17-23 in Tokyo to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the ACL's establishment and the 20th anniversary of the JFC's authorization as a corporation.

About 150 composers from 14 countries are expected to take part in the festival, which features the following free events:

Sept. 18 -- A keynote lecture titled "Identity of Asian Music," by Chou Wen Chung, composer and professor emeritus of Columbia University; a symposium at 10 a.m. in room 5-109 in the Music Department of Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music (Geidai); and a concert based on the theme "Talented Young Composers in the 21st Century," at 3:30 p.m. in the Geidai Music Department's Hall No. 6.

Sept. 19 -- A country report at 9:30 a.m. in Bunkyo Civic Hall (BCH). For reservations, call (03) 5474-1853.

Sept. 20 -- An "Electro Acoustic Concert" at 11 a.m. in Mirai CAN Hall at Nihon Kagaku Miraikan (National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation). For reservations, call (03) 5474-1853.

Sept. 22 -- Two lectures titled "Music from Syria" by M. Q. Dalal (representative of Ensemble Ornina) and "Gagaku Music From Japan and Nha Nhac From Vietnam" by University of the Air professor Yoshihiko Tokumaru from 9:30 a.m. in the BCH multipurpose room. Reservations and a lecture fee of 500 yen required.

Admission to the following concerts (except for "Asian Concerto") will cost 2,000 yen each.

Sept. 17 -- "Opening Concert," 6:30 p.m., BCH (main hall).

Sept. 18 -- "Asian Concerto," 7 p.m., Geidai's Sogakudo Hall, (1,800 yen).

Sept. 19 -- "Fascination of Chamber Orchestra," 3 p.m., BCH (sub hall) and "The Charm of Orchestras," 7 p.m., BCH (main hall).

Sept. 20 -- "Enjoy the Recorder Sound" by the Malle Symen Quartet, 2 p.m., BCH (sub hall).

Sept. 21 -- the ACL Young Composer Award Competition Concert, 2 p.m., BCH (main hall) and "Charm of the Recorder," 7 p.m., Denzuin Temple.

Sept. 22 -- "Afternoon Chamber Music Concert 1," 2 p.m., BCH (sub hall) and "Asian Tradition," 6:30 p.m., BCH (main hall).

Sept. 23 -- "Afternoon Chamber Music Concert 2," 11 a.m., BCH (sub hall) and "Final Concert" 2:30 p.m., BCH (main hall).
