IN THE RECORD BAG
By MARK JARNES
Special to The Japan Times
David Dicembre has been in Tokyo for the past nine years, and has been spinning records for just as long. He's the manager of the Japanese version of online music magazine Resident Advisor and on top of that he organizes a regular chill-out party called Sound Garden. This is what's in his record bag:
Opening Number: DJ Sprinkles — "Ball'r (Madonna-Free Zone)" [Mule Musiq]. Pure house bliss, it's got some great intro vocals that continue later on in the track.
Golden Oldie: The Neon Judgement — "TV Treated" [Kleo]. A 1982 release from a Belgian band that's personally significant to me. I am a huge fan of 1980s E.B.M. (electronic body music) and this one's a true classic that has passed the test of time.
New Classic: Voices From The Lake feat. Donato Dozzy & Neel — "S.T. (VFTL Rework)" [Prologue]. Originally released on the excellent charity compilation "Composure: Ambient Techno For Japan," this is the reworked version that has just been released on Prologue. They first performed this version at last year's Labyrinth music festival and it was truly magic.
Floor-Filler: Jared Wilson — "This Love" . I am not a big fan of acid-influenced tracks but this one is a killer! I love the bass line and sexy vocals.
Must-Listen: Bee Mask — "Canzoni Dal Laboratorio Del Silenzio Cosmico II" [Spectrum Spools]. An outstanding track! Originally released on cassette by Gift Tapes, this is a 15-minute sonic journey that should be listened with headphones — loud.
Set Closer: Fred P — "Emotive Vibrations" [Finale Sessions]. The title fits the song's vibe very well. It's perfect for an encore, to send the people back happy.
David Dicembre will be playing with Manik at Module in Tokyo on April 7 (10 p.m.; ¥2,500 + one drink (with flyer), ¥3,000 + one drink (at the door); 3464-8432). For more information, visit module-tokyo.com.
