LISTENING POST: LIVE

Red Hot Chili Peppers

By DAISUKE KIKUCHI

After a triumphant appearance at this year's Summer Sonic music festival, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are coming back to Japan via cinemas.

The "Red Hot Chili Peppers Live: I'm With You" concert film will be screened at cinemas nationwide for two weeks starting Sept. 23. The movie features a show the group performed in Cologne, Germany, on Aug. 30. That concert was broadcast live into theaters across Europe and later that day was screened in multiplexes across North America. The film also features exclusive interview footage, and the delay in getting the movie to Japan was due to the time it took for subtitling.

The Cologne performance focused almost entirely on new material, so fans of the band's early work may be a little disappointed with the film. The Chili Peppers did, however, play 1991's "Give It Away" from the album "Blood Sugar Sex Magik."

The four-piece come back into the spotlight after more than five years, with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer now on board. Originally a backup musician with the band, he joins long-time members Anthony Kiedis, Michael Peter Balzary (better known as Flea) and Chad Smith.

The film showcases the band's 10th studio album and the signature style of funk rock they've been honing since their formation in 1983. It's a sound they've stuck with for "I'm With You" and particularly the album's first single, "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie."

This cinematic album screening isn't a first of its kind. U.S. rock group Foo Fighters pulled a similar stunt earlier this year when they followed the screening of their "Foo Fighters: Back and Forth" documentary with a special live performance of new album, "Wasting Light" — complete with text requests from the audience.

"Red Hot Chili Peppers Live: I'm With You" might not be a substitute for seeing the group perform live, but fans should be happy. As the band are a big hit with aspiring teenage rockers across Japan, make sure to get tickets before the high school music clubs snatch up all the seats.

"Red Hot Chili Peppers Live: I'm With You" will be screened at the following theaters: Shinjuku Ward 9 in Tokyo; Yokohama Burg 13 in Yokohama, Kanagawa Pref.; Keisei Rosa 10 in Chiba; United Cinema in Urawa, Saitama Pref.; Umeda Burg 7 in Osaka; T-Joy in Kyoto; Hiroshima Ward 11 in Hiroshima; 109 Cinemas in Nagoya, Aichi Pref.; T-Joy in Hakata, Fukuoka Pref.; Sapporo Cinema Frontier in Sapporo, Hokkaido; and Moviv Rifu in Miyagi.
