Festa Summer Muza Kawasaki
By NAOKO KURAMOCHI
Musicians will gather for the next month in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, with the goal of bringing classical music to listeners of all ages.
The annual Festa Summer Muza Kawasaki will take place at Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall from July 25 till Aug. 15. Tickets to each concert will cost ¥3,000 or less, ensuring that the music will be accessible to everyone. The hall says such low prices are possible due to support from the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Enterprises.
The main highlight of the festival will be performances by nine metropolitan orchestras. Among them will be the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, which will start and end the festival with performances conducted by Hubert Soudant and Norichika Iimori, respectively. The orchestras will cater to classical music fans with well-known pieces, but also attempt to reach out to those new to the symphony by playing songs used in popular TV dramas, films and commercials.
As a departure from previous years, the festival will also feature a jazz concert on Aug. 10. Performers will include pianist Masahiro Sayama, bassist Yosuke Inoue and violinist Naoko Terai, who will treat the audience to tunes such as "Bitter Sweet," which was composed by Don Sebesky and as inspired by Symphony No. 2, the Third Movement composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff and "La Fiesta" by Chick Corea.
As usual, the festival will also feature children's concerts under the banner Kids Festa. Children 4 years and older will get the chance to enjoy the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Norichika Iimori. The performances, from Aug. 1-3, will feature a junior high school violinist, famed pianist Noriko Ogawa, and a story-telling concert by organist Yasuko Harada. There will also be concerts suitable for babies performed by music college students.
