Get some trophy bruises in Osaka

They know how to party in Osaka. This year's selection of New Year's Eve bashes may lack the big-name clout of Tokyo's, but it'll likely trump them in terms of pure, untrammeled fun.

With most of the clubs in the city relying on "all-star" lineups of resident DJs, Onzieme comes the closest to providing a marquee name. Progressive-house DJ/producer Paolo Mojo isn't quite a guaranteed draw, but his stock on the international circuit has him regularly mentioned in the same breath as established A-listers such as John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo. He's supported by a solid lineup of Onzieme regulars including Ko Matsushima, Yashima and Juse. Importantly, they've also got go-go dancers, and you can't say no to that.

Meanwhile, if you're just looking for something really, really mental, you'd be hard pushed to top the MIDI_sai Greatful Monsters Countdown party at Studio Partita, which promises nearly 12 hours in the company of Osaka's finest peddlers of fractured electronica, noise and toilet humor.

Last year's was a shindig of quite awesome stupidity, not to mention some damn fine music (well, what I can remember of it at least). Expect more of the same this time around, with sampler-abusing songstress Doddodo, noise-rock duo Bogulta, one-man grindcore unit Maruosa and electro savant KA4U, among others. Be warned that things can get pretty physical at these parties, so anyone hoping not to start the New Year with a black eye and a bloody nose might want to look elsewhere.

Onzieme New Year Count Down '09 takes place on Dec. 31 at Onzieme, Shinsaibashi (9 p.m. till late; ¥5,500 including one drink; www.onzi-eme.com). Greatful Monsters Countdown takes place on Dec. 31 at Studio Partita, Kitakagaya (5:30 p.m. till 5 a.m.; ¥3,000 in advance, ¥4,000 on the door, plus one drink; see www.midisai.com).
