British trip-hopper Tricky made his second appearance at Fuji Rock this year, and was looking forward to seeing Ian Brown and Mark Stewart + Maffia. When told the two acts were playing almost at the same time at opposite ends of the festival he seemed unperturbed: He was sure he could get a car to take him from the Red Marquee to the Orange Court.
I hear your new album, "Knowle West Boy," is about your childhood.
Nah, it's just another album.
It wasn't inspired by anything?
Nah, I just go into the studio. The studio is my inspiration.
It isn't like nostalgic or anything? What was it like growing up in Knowle West in Bristol, in the West of England?
It was pretty rough.
How did you get into music?
I wasn't interested in music. I was interested in money.
Making money?
Yeah.
Doing what?
(At this point, Tricky threw me out of his dressing room. But he was happy to have his picture taken.)
