LISTENING POST

LIVE

Gan-Ban Night feat. Justice and DJ Busy P

Staff writer

Depending on what music mag you're reading, they're either the godfathers of new rave or the saviors of dance music. Period. But then it's not just London's snotty music press who've embraced Gaspard Auge and Xavier de Rosnay.

Justice

As Justice, the Parisian electro duo last year won two MTV Europe awards and remixed new-rave kingpins Klaxons. They've also snagged three Grammy nominations. And while it remains to be seen if they have the durability of other "live" dance acts such as Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers and Underworld, for now the current buzz surrounding the band is ensuring full houses wherever they play.

Justice gained recognition in 2004 with their remix of Simian's "Never Be Alone" (aka "We Are Your Friends"), which became an indie-dancefloor staple in Britain. Since then they've remixed the likes of Fatboy Slim, Britney Spears, Franz Ferdinand, N.E.R.D. and the always credibility-hungry Justin Timberlake. Last year the hipster label Vice Records signed them up for their debut album "cross."

With their fondness for laying down thrashing guitars over hard beats, Justice's sound is far removed from "traditional" house in both their sound and their look — even though they count a huge number of clubbers among their fans. Indeed, on their forthcoming Japan tour, expect to see as much headbanging as dancing and head-nodding. Like most "live" dance outfits, Justice aren't afraid of gimmicks (they're fond of covering the stage in crucifixes) to distract the crowd from the fact that there is little happening on stage other than deux hommes twiddling knobs.

Gan-Ban Night feat. Justice and DJ Busy P: at Osaka Big Cat ([06] 6535-5569) on Jan. 23; Ageha Studio Coast ([03] 3444-6751), Jan. 24. Both start at 6 p.m. Tickets are ¥6,000. Justice will DJ with Busy P at Warehouse in Azabu, Tokyo on Jan. 25 (¥4,500; limited tickets on the door.); www.ganban.net
