Soundtrack of the summer: Audion

Soundtrack of the summer

Special to The Japan Times

The latest in a long line of influential techno producers to emerge from Detroit, Matthew Dear has wasted little time becoming one of the club world's hottest commodities. In the past few years, he's scored widespread acclaim for records released both under his own name and the aliases Audion, False and Jabberjaw. As Audion, Dear peddles a libidinous, scuzzed-up take on minimal techno. His signature tune, "Mouth to Mouth," an almost absurdly stripped-down banger, became one of last year's biggest techno anthems. Audion plays Metamorphose, the eclectic all-night dance party that, for many, symbolically marks the end of the summer festival season.

Also check out: Techno godfather Juan Atkins (as Model 500), Richie Hawtin, Darren Emerson, Lindstrom, Sound Tribe Sector 9 and Mad Professor.

The setting: Expect a generally young, club-savvy crowd of up to 20,000 people and a rather less chemically enhanced mood than you'd get at trance raves. Psytrance, a standard feature of so many of those events, is blessedly absent from the bill. The wooded site comes complete with an amusement park and onsen.

When/where: Aug. 25; gates open at 4:30 p.m, with music from 6 p.m. until 9 a.m. Japan Cycle Sports Center in Izu Shuzenji, Shizuoka Prefecture. Take the JR line to Mishima Station, then the Izu-Hakone Sunzu line to Shuzenji Station. From there, it's a 15-minute ride on the Naka Izu Tokai bus. By car, follow Route 136 from Mishima to the site. Tickets are 10,500 yen in advance, 12,000 yen on the day. Parking and campsite tickets cost 2,000 yen apiece and can only be purchased with sets of two or more admission tickets. www.metamo.info
