CD Case -- Full-On
You think I typed "Full-On" up above when I really mean "Ambient," don't you? Welcome to CDs With Misleading Titles.
Compiled by Swiss DJ Phantomas (Thomas Wlprachtiger), "The Natural Waves of Sound 003" sounds by the title and even looks on the cover like something for the chill section. Having not heard the first two installments in the series, I had this earmarked for the ambient stack. Imagine my surprise when the first track ("First Hand," Krunch) bumped into a big fat 144-bpm bassline just half a minute in. The track list offered no major clues, with acts like Sesto Sento and Lish having already spun some brilliant downtempo stuff on last year's lounge classic "Unwind" lounge classic. OK, Bizarre Contact on Track 6 was a remarkable clue, but who knew? Anyway, it's all intelligent full-on.
Getting beyond that whole "don't judge a book by its cover" thing, the "Natural Waves" series is all about presenting fresh, innovative sounds. "003" was just released last month in Japan (Noga Records) but already these numbers are getting some play time. Phantomas did an excellent job lining up tracks that can successively cannibalize the building energy of each sonic story. The overall sound is sharp and vivid. The production quality is excellent. DJ you want this CD.
Only the name and a perception that as "003" it's somehow incomplete will keep this compilation from being one of 2006's highest sellers.
