Intern baptism by fire; "Doctor X: Surgeon"; CM of the week: Aeon Topvalu
Hospital dramas never seem to go out of style. Two new series centered on female physicians premiere this week — and in fact, they premiere on the same night, at the same time.
"Rejidento: Gonin no Kenshui" ("Resident: Five Medical Interns"; TBS, Thursday, 9 p.m.) stars Riisa Naka as Shizuku Miyama, a medical student who has already finished her rotation in various medical fields. She is now a first-year intern assigned to the Emergency Room with four other interns. Their supervisor is Dr. Miyajima (Yukiyoshi Ozawa), who doesn't consider interns to be proper doctors. Shizuku is baptized by fire during her first night shift when she has to treat a woman who habitually attempts suicide.
Michiko Daimon (Ryoko Yonekura), the protagonist of "Dokuta X: Gekai" ("Doctor X: Surgeon"; TV Asahi, Thursday, 9 p.m.) is a much more experienced physician, though she looks and acts more like a supermodel. She's a freelance surgeon recently hired by a hospital where a number of doctors have quit due to harsh working conditions.
A rookie surgeon at the hospital is shocked when he meets her, since the evening before he was at a nightclub where a woman who looked just like Dr. Daimon treated a patron who collapsed on the dance floor. Her unusual effect on colleagues and patients is not just due to her glamorous appearance. She's also quite opinionated, and immediately annoys the chief surgeon, Dr. Kubo, when she comments that his operating room methods are old-fashioned.
CM of the week
Aeon Topvalu: At first it looks like a promotional ad for renewable energy: a field of solar collector panels stretching off toward a distant mountain range. But then, from the left, a young woman (Fumino Kimura) and a young man (Kei Tanaka) come running in tandem and in slow motion across the screen, seemingly between the panels. The scene cuts to a closeup of their running forms and the voice-over says, "Clothing that changes the Sun's energy into warmth."
The ad is not for solar power but for the light down jackets the two young people are wearing. They are part of major retailer Aeon's low-priced Topvalu line, and cost only ¥5,800, which means they're competing directly with Uniqlo, not only in terms of price but in terms of hip environmental awareness.
