Book Bites

AUSTRALIA, by Paul Harding, et al. Lonely Planet Publications, 2002, 1040 pp., $25.99 (paper)

The latest edition of Lonely Planet's best-selling guide to Australia contains a wealth of information for international travelers and locals alike. Two color sections, "Watching Wildlife" and "Aboriginal Art," introduce the continent's unique and varied wildlife and the advances that have been made in indigenous film, music, dance and theater. Both sections are filled with beautiful color photographs.

As well as listing things to do and see, accommodation and places to eat out, the guide also contains information on topics of contemporary interest, such as Australia's refugee policy and the collapse of Ansett Airlines, a glossary of Aussie slang, and tips for minimizing the environmental impact of your travels.

QUEENSLAND, by Joseph Bindloss, et al. Lonely Planet Publications, 2002, 516 pp., $19.99 (paper)

Queensland boasts a wide variety of natural and man-made attractions, but the majority of visitors barely scratch the surface of what the Sunshine State has to offer.

The Lonely Planet guide to Queensland covers it all, from the glitter of the Gold Coast to the stunning beauty of wild, untamed Cape York. A self-guided walking tour of Brisbane allows you to explore the state capital at your own pace, and tips for safe outback driving, handy road distance charts, and information on when to use a four-wheel-drive is also included.
