"Nobuyoshi Araki: Higan"

Rat Hole Gallery

By MIKE HAMILTON

Nobuyoshi Araki is most noted for his provocative depictions of scantily-clad women, often posed in submissive positions. His work has garnered him attention and admirers, including stars such as Lady Gaga and Bjork.

This exhibition displays more than 450 images from Araki's most recent body of work, which is considerably more reserved in its content than some of his previous collections. A series of color photos taken after the Great East Japan Earthquake are on display, as well as a large collection of interesting photographs taken with a 200 mm telephoto lens from the back of taxi during the sweltering summer of 2010.

All of the works play on a sense of nostalgia and Araki's personal emotions during a "time of loss" following the death of his cherished cat Chiro last spring; till Sept. 25.

Rat Hole Gallery; (03) 6419-3581; 5-5-3, B1 Minami Aoyama Minato-ku; 3-min walk from Exit A5 of Omotesando Station (Chiyoda, Hanzomon and Ginza subway lines). 12 p.m.-8 p.m. Admission free. Closed Mon. www.ratholegallery.com.
