Message to young people
It is important to never give up. To be successful, people have to make an effort and be patient. You also have to be in the right place at the right time.

I was born in Indonesia. My father was originally from China, but he moved to Malaysia and then Indonesia in the 1940s. He was in charge of importing dyes for textiles and distributed them to Indonesian batik factories. When I was a child, I often went to his company to see him work. Around that time, the head office of my father’s company in Malaysia didn’t trust Indonesia very much, so it gave up the business in Indonesia. But my father remained in Indonesia and took over the business and later founded his own company.

After graduating from Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona, I joined a computer hardware company in Chicago. At that time, I had no intention of returning to Indonesia, but since my parents asked me to help out with their business, I returned.

In the early '90s, I was in charge of accounting and witnessed differences in professionalism between the United States and Indonesia. This revolutionized the way we did business. Although the company had grown at a remarkable pace at that time, no system or manuals existed in the office. I took that as a new challenge and started to expand the business.

I had two big problems. One was a management problem of the family business and the other was a fact that our company didn’t have any system. I didn’t know how to handle these issues. Then a brother who had been responsible for sales and marketing and I went to Lausanne, Switzerland, to study at a global business school. We took a class called “How to lead a family business.” Since then, both of us have gradually started to share the same views and have been able to establish a clearer company vision.

My dream is to bequeath the company to the next generation. We are a listed company, but the next challenge is to maintain our success. I will seize any opportunity to move forward. To expand the company further, flexibility is required. Whether a company is big or small, it should the flexibility to adjust to change.
