Message to young people
What’s most important in life is to do what you enjoy. If it is something you like, you will enjoy doing it no matter how difficult it is. If you can, don’t study many things but on the one thing that resonates most with you. There is no such thing as “must” having to do something. In addition, it is important to reflect on yourself and what it is you really want to do. Even if your income is not that high, if your job is something you like, then you will lead a happy life.

I loved to listen to music when I was little, and began to learn how to play an instrument when I was around 10 years old. When I entered Assumption University of Thailand, I had no intention of becoming a businessman; all I wanted to do was learn English.

My career began after I replied to an ad in the paper for a sales position at a music-related company, EMI Thailand, where I worked from 1992 to 1997. In 1998, Thailand was in a severe recession and partly because of the bad performance of BMG’s managing director, he was fired. I replaced him at the age of 28 and had a difficult time in rebuilding the company.

After two or three years, BMG became a major stockholder in Bakery Music. This was a big deal since Bakery Music was the third biggest company in the music industry in Thailand. Since I was a part of the international operations team, I made many friends and acquaintances all around the world. As far as work goes, it is important to make full use of one’s friends and connections. It can sometime lead to shortcuts.

What was most difficult at the time was finding competent workers; many young recruits quit, and the retention rate was around 70%. It is difficult to find good workers and to train them. At the same time, our company has been progressing; handling Michael Jackson’s concert in Thailand was one of our biggest milestones.

GMM Grammy started from zero. We never knew where to take things and often times it was difficult to figure out how not to go in the wrong direction. In this regard, we are still looking for the right path and it will take us many years to achieve our goals. At the same time, I think it is a good thing that our company is already dealing with 20 to 30 countries in our daily work. To us, this makes our job worth doing, and is one of our biggest challenges.
