Message to young people
You only live once. It is all up to you how you live. I think you will have a better outcome if you give it your all in both your career and your personal life. Rather than being bothered by thinking “what about a life like this or that,” do your best with what lies in front of you and try to move forward step by step. In the end, I think this is the quickest way to find the best path in life.

When I was in the U.S. in 1985, I was ignored because I couldn’t speak English. I wondered what I should do to be able to speak English. It was a bit reckless, but I finally decided to join a foreign-affiliated company. I am easily motivated to learn, but I am not the type who can spend years just studying. I thought if I worked in the finance industry, I could experience the real dramas of the economy every day and then learn various things about the economy than working in other type of companies. So I decided to work at Salomon Brothers.

While working at foreign-affiliated finance companies, I developed a strong desire to start a new service – online trading in Japan. The deregulation of trading commissions was to be realized in a short time. There were two possible approaches: start the service within the company or to establish my own online trading company. Between the choices to remain at the company or to leave and establish a new company, I chose to leave.

A fortuitous encounter with Nobuyuki Idei, the former Sony chairman, through an acquaintance, set the stage for me to establish the company. Without his major support, I don't think I would have been able to open the business, I think.

Even when everyone and the whole society is saying “let’s go left,” you need to discern what is really better and sometimes still choose to go “right.” Making such decisions without failing is important for management. It wasn't easy for me.
