Naoshima is the DPJ's policy research committee chairman and responsible for putting together the party platform for the Aug. 30 election.
He entered politics in 1992, winning an Upper House seat as a member of the now-defunct Democratic Socialist Party.
He joined the DPJ in 1998 and has served in key posts, including Diet affairs chief and secretary general of the DPJ’s Upper House caucus.
Before becoming a lawmaker, he worked for Toyota Motor Corp. and was vice chairman of the Confederation of Japan Automobile Workers’ Unions.
The soft-spoken Naoshima, 63, was born in Osaka Prefecture.
His hobbies are reading and swimming, according to his Web site.
