The second son in a family that owns a 300-year-old pharmacy in Shiga Prefecture, he went to the graduate school at Kyoto University before starting work at Toray Industries Inc.’s research institute as an engineer.
He later became involved in labor union activities at Toray and was head of the union’s Shiga district. He won a Lower House seat for the first time in 1986 as a member of the Democratic Socialist Party that existed between 1960 and 1994.
In 1994, he moved to Shinshinto, a conservative group that was eventually absorbed by the DPJ.
Kawabata joined the DPJ in 1998. He has been the DPJ vice president chairman of the committee on audits and administration oversight.
