STATE MINISTER IN CHARGE OF NATIONAL STRATEGY
Yoshito Sengoku
Date of birth: Jan. 15, 1946
Party: DPJ
Electoral district: Lower House; Tokushima No. 1 (sixth term)
A seasoned lawyer, Sengoku won his first Lower House seat in 1990 after turning to politics in Tokushima Prefecture.
Passing the bar exam as a University of Tokyo student, Sengoku started building his career as a lawyer in 1971.
While providing legal consultations to individual clients, Sengoku was actively involved in labor disputes and criminal cases.
His inclination toward politics was reportedly nurtured by his battles with corporate and government power, which is often the central issue in court cases.
Sengoku won his first Diet seat on the Social Democratic Party of Japan ticket but was defeated in 1993.
He made his comeback in 1996 on the DPJ ticket.
