Hirofumi Hirano

After graduating from the faculty of science and engineering of Chuo University in Tokyo, Hirano joined Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., now known as Panasonic Corp., in 1971.
He served as an executive member of the Matsushita Electric union from 1988 to 1994, during which he was chief secretary to Masao Nakamura, a Socialist Lower House member.
A native of Wakayama Prefecture, Hirano was elected to the Lower House for the first time in 1996 as an independent with support from the Matsushita union. He joined the DPJ in 1998.
Hirano has served as chairman of the executive board of the DPJ. Considered a Hatoyama loyalist, he worked behind the scenes to whip up votes for Hatoyama in the party presidential election.
*Appointed to take over duties of Mizuho Fukushima (State Minister in charge of Consumer Affairs and Declining Birthrate) after she was fired from the cabinet May 28, 2010.
