DEFENSE MINISTER
Toshimi Kitazawa
Date of birth: March 6, 1938
Party: DPJ

A graduate of Waseda University in Tokyo, Kitazawa started his political career as a Diet member's secretary. He was elected in 1975 to the Nagano Prefectural Assembly. His father was also a local assembly member.
After serving five terms in the assembly over 17 years, he was elected to the Upper House in 1992 as a member of the LDP. He campaigned on his experience in local politics and vowed to tackle rural issues.
Kitazawa left the LDP in 1993 and hitched his political fate to former Prime Minister Tsutomu Hata, also vice president of the now-defunct Shinshinto.
In 1994, he served as parliamentary vice farm minister under Hata.
He joined the DPJ in 1998 along with Hata.
At the DPJ, Kitazawa has been chairman of the Upper House foreign policy and defense committee.
