Hatoyama Cabinet (Formed September 16, 2009)
MINISTER OF LAND, INFRASTRUCTURE, TRANSPORT AND TOURISM
Seiji Maehara
Date of birth: April 30, 1962
Party: DPJ
Electoral district: Lower House; Kyoto No. 2 (sixth term)
Maehara was the DPJ's youngest-ever president, heading the party from September 2005 to April 2006.
Known as an expert on security, he has also often spoken out in the Diet on "amakudari"— the practice of giving retiring senior bureaucrats lucrative jobs — and public works issues.
After studying politics at the Matsushita Institute of Government and Management, he became a national lawmaker in 1993 following a stint in the Kyoto Prefectural Assembly.
Although he reached the helm of the DPJ at 43, he resigned in April 2006 to take responsibility for falsely accusing the second son of an LDP lawmaker of receiving money from scandal-tainted Livedoor Co. Since then he has kept a relatively low profile.
